Spectrum Thinking
How the concept of sexuality and gender is likely to evolve
90min Training Workshop (Session D)
Training Workshop Content
This workshop explores how our conceptualisations of sexual and gender identity will continue to evolve over the coming generations, in particular, whether “spectrum” thinking instead of placing everything into distinct, often binary, categories will become the norm.
In a discussion of what a future like this may look like, topics will be addressed such as questioning the patriarchy and its associated constructs such as gender, newly developing conceptual frameworks such as sexual configurations theory, queer identities, human attraction and how individual identities (both minority and not) interact and impact our lives.
IS THIS WORKSHOP SUITABLE FOR?
It is most suitable for those who have a pre established knowledge of sexual and gender identities, and who are looking to analyse their preconceptions of the social world in which we live.
It will involve actively challenging many of societies ideas about identity, from sexual identity to racial identity to social class to political affiliations, and so any participant should be open and willing to be taken through that journey.
THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO
WHO
CHALLENGE WHAT THEY KNOW.
ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS WORKSHOP?
WHAT
Challenge preconceived notions of sexual identity and gender and appreciate that the diversity and nuance of the human race can not be truly represented by categorical frameworks.
Understand how binary thinking influences multiple aspects of everyday life, from limiting personal expression to facilitating a lack of nuance in discussions about race and politics.
Learn how you as an individual can alter your binary way of thinking towards a more progressive, spectrum way of thinking for the benefit of both yourself and others.
Appreciate the benefits that the dismantling of the gender binary can have, from being a prerequisite for gender equality to giving greater consideration for male mental health.
